An event dedicated to Novruz holiday was held at Sumgayit State University. The event was held in the courtyard of the university and all faculties presented their khonchas.

Rector Professor Elkhan Huseynov addressed the event attendees and congratulated them on Novruz holiday. He also talked about the ancient history of the holiday and its traditions. He noted that Novruz had a national holiday status during Heydar Aliyev’s presidency. As a result of President Ilham Aliyev’s and vice-president, President of Heydar Aliyev Fund, goodwill ambassador of UNESCO and ISESCO Mehriban Aliyeva’s activities Novruz was included in a list of intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO which is supreme cultural institution of UN on September 30, 2009. With the decision of 64th session of UN General Assembly dated February 23, 2010 March 21 was declared as an International Novruz Day. Thus, since 2010 Novruz holiday has been celebrating as an international holiday. 

In his speech rector expressed his hope about freedom from occupation of our invaded lands and celebration of Novruz in Lachin, Shusha, Aghdam, Kalbajar, etc. 

In the event, a holiday fire, various national games, Novruz traditions, colorful Novruz khonchas, samples of our national cuisine, samovar tea, Kosa and Kechal, Bahargiz caused a real holiday ambiance. All these followed by a concert program where singers and university dance group “Sama” performed.
