A scientific-practical conference dedicated to the International Day of Monuments and Historical Sites held at Sumgayit State University
On April 10, a scientific-practical conference on the topic of “Protection of historical heritage and sustainable tourism” was held at Sumgayit State University (SSU) on the occasion of the International Day of Monuments and Historical Sites, jointly organized by the Department of History of Azerbaijan and the Peoples of Eastern Europe of the Faculty of History and Geography and the “Chiraggala-Shabran” State Historical and Cultural Reserve within the framework of the “One Student - One Monument” project. First, a viewing of the exhibition “Modern Challenges in the Protection of Cultural Heritage” organized by Samra Hajiyeva, a senior researcher at the “Chiraggala-Shabran” State Historical and Cultural Reserve, was held in the lobby of the university. Then, the event, hosted by a fourth-year student of the Faculty of History and Geography, Ellada Zargarova began with a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the Motherland. The National Anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan was played. At the conference, Vice-Rector for Social Affairs and Public Relations of SSU, Associate Professor Elmar Khalilov addressed the guests and participants. He emphasized that the cooperation established between Sumgayit State University and the “Chiraggala-Shabran” State Historical and Cultural Reserve continues successfully, noting the importance of this partnership in terms of scientific research and education. The Vice Rector expressed his gratitude to everyone who contributed to the organization of the conference and drew attention to the important role such initiatives play in increasing the interest of young people in historical heritage. He emphasized that, regardless of their specialty, each person should know the history of their people in depth, preserve and develop it and correctly pass it on to future generations. Then, the Director of the “Chiraggala-Shabran” State Historical and Cultural Reserve, Gunel Pirguliyeva made a speech and provided detailed information about the activities of the reserve she leads, the monuments located in the area, and the work carried out in this direction. She noted that the reserve is located in the northeastern region of Azerbaijan, in the territory of Shabran and Siyazan districts, and combines 7 monuments with a rich history. The reserve is of great importance both in terms of the protection of historical and cultural heritage, and the development of tourism and scientific research. At the conference, Head of the Department of History of the Peoples of Azerbaijan and Eastern Europe, Professor Shirkhan Salimov delivered a report on “State policy and modern approaches in the protection of historical and cultural heritage and the development of sustainable tourism”. Around the report, the Head of the Department of Early Bronze Age Archaeology of the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS, the leading researcher of the reserve, Associate Professor Safar Ashurov delivered a report on “Historical monuments and their significance”, and the Chief Fund Keeper Vusala Babirova delivered a report on “On the activities of the “Chiraggala-Shabran” State Historical and Cultural Reserve” and shared their views on the work done in the direction of the protection of historical and cultural heritage, the study of monuments and the activities of the reserve. Within the framework of the event, cooperation opportunities between Sumgayit State University and the “Chiraggala-Shabran” State Historical and Cultural Reserve were discussed. The parties exchanged views on the implementation of joint projects, the organization of master classes, the holding of summer schools and other promising areas of activity. They noted that such cooperation makes a significant contribution to increasing the practical knowledge of students, expanding scientific and research activities and a deeper study of historical and cultural heritage. Then, Dean of the Faculty of History and Geography, Professor Adil Bakhshaliyev made a speech and emphasized the importance of continuing mutual meetings and joint initiatives within the framework of cooperation between the university and the “Chiraggala-Shabran” State Historical and Cultural Reserve.
