The January 20 tragedy is one of the bloodiest and most memorable pages in the history of the Azerbaijani people's struggle for freedom. Among the victims of this tragedy are scientists belonging to the scientific community of the city of Sumgayit - employees of the Institute of Polymer Materials. On January 24, 1990, armored vehicles belonging to the Soviet army committed a serious crime against civilians in the Jeyranbatan settlement, on the 24th kilometer of the Sumgayit-Baku highway.
A car carrying scientists on their way to work was crushed and destroyed by a tank. As a result, employees of the Institute of Polymer Materials - Professor, Doctor of Chemical Sciences Ibrahim Ibrahimov, and Candidates of Chemical Sciences Svetlana Mammadova and Ismayil Mursagulov - were brutally murdered. As Sumgayit State University, we deeply honor all the martyrs of the January 20 tragedy, including the employees of the Institute of Polymer Materials who lost their lives, and we will always keep their dear memory alive.
