Sumgayit State University launches cooperation on electronic waste
On July 29, a roundtable discussion was held at Sumgayit State University (SSU) on the topic of “Electronic waste - the silent threat of the modern world”. The purpose of the event was to discuss the impact of electronic waste on the environment, raise awareness in this area and discuss initiatives related to the integration of sustainable development strategies into the higher education environment. The meeting was attended by the leadership of SSU, the leadership of “Smart Waste” LLC, which operates in the field of waste management, relevant specialists of the SOCAR Carbamide Plant and the university. The event was opened by the acting rector of the university, corresponding member of ANAS, professor Aminaga Sadigov, welcoming the participants and emphasizing the relevance of the topic. He said that with the development of technology, toxic substances contained in electronic devices that have entered our lives have a serious negative impact on the environment and human health if not properly managed. Professor Aminaga Sadigov also touched upon the role of universities in this area and noted that higher education institutions, in addition to being centers of science and education, are strategic institutions that shape the ecological thinking of society. A. Sadigov added that the issue is not limited to the management of physical waste - it also requires a change in human thinking and lifestyle. The university aims to transfer this responsibility to society both in its internal management and through students. Suleyman Aliyev, director of Smart Waste LLC, who participated in the event, made an extensive presentation. He spoke about the impact of electronic waste on society from both an ecological and economic perspective. It was noted that it is possible to approach this waste not only as a problem, but also as a resource. This approach creates new opportunities for the state and private sectors in the field of recycling. It was also noted that this initiative of SSU can be an example for other higher education institutions. Cooperation with universities should be one of the main platforms for the development of awareness and a scientific approach in this direction. Nurlan Akhundov, HSE Manager of SOCAR Carbamide Plant, SSU sustainability expert, provided information about the “Sustainability Concept” prepared for universities and the trainings to be carried out within this framework. Also speaking at the event were university employees – Director of the Career and Alumni Center, acting asst. Ruhengiz Amirova, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, associate professor Ulduz Aghayev, Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Ecology, associate professor Tunzale Babayeva, and associate professor of the same department Nargiz Ashurova, who shared their views on various aspects of e-waste – its impact on the bioenvironment, recycling potential, economic burden, and the role of education in shaping environmental behavior. At the end of the event, an agreement was signed between SSU and “Smart Waste” LLC on cooperation in the field of e-waste collection and management.
