AN INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE DEDICATED TO THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE "CONTRACT OF THE CENTURY" WAS HELD AT SSU
On September 19, Sumgait State University (SSU) hosted an international scientific conference titled "Contract of the Century - the Foundation of the Political, Socio-Economic, and Cultural Development Strategy of the Republic of Azerbaijan." The event, attended by historians, political scientists, and research scholars, began with a moment of silence in memory of the national leader Heydar Aliyev and those who sacrificed their lives for the country’s territorial integrity. Following the commemoration, the National Anthem of Azerbaijan was played.
The rector of SSU, associate professor Rufat Azizov, delivered the opening address, warmly greeting the guests, university professors, and students. In his speech, the rector reflected on the 30 years that have passed since the signing of the first international oil agreement in Azerbaijan on October 20, 1994, known as the "Contract of the Century." He highlighted that this historic document has enabled Azerbaijan to make significant progress. Rufat Azizov also praised the accomplishments of the past year, particularly under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev and the victorious Armed Forces, emphasizing that the strength behind these achievements stems from the "Contract of the Century."
Rector Rufat Azizov remarked that the "Contract of the Century" had brought political and economic benefits in the second decade of Azerbaijan’s independence, a trend that continues to influence various sectors today. He elaborated on how the agreement shaped the economic and political landscape of the region, playing a pivotal role in ensuring Europe’s energy security. Additionally, he pointed out the advancements in oil production and processing technologies that have occurred in Azerbaijan over the past 30 years. Highlighting the development of human capital, the rector gave specific examples of how Azerbaijan's engineers have become respected experts in oil and gas production, not only in Azerbaijan but globally.
Rufat Azizov concluded by noting that the "Contract of the Century" has contributed to addressing social issues in Azerbaijan and has paved the way for the establishment of new initiatives in scientific and industrial production. He emphasized the global recognition of Azerbaijan's engineers as experts in the oil and gas industry, reflecting the nation's growing influence in this field.
Rufat Azizov spoke about the significant contributions of Ilham Aliyev, who was the First Vice-President of the State Oil Company at the time and is now the President of Azerbaijan, in implementing the new oil strategy created by Heydar Aliyev. He concluded his remarks with the following: "During that period, Mr. Ilham Aliyev held numerous intensive meetings and negotiations with the heads of major oil companies in cities like Washington, New York, Houston, Dallas, Istanbul, and others. His efforts were instrumental in securing contract terms that fully served the national interests of our people."
The conference, moderated by Doctor of sciences in history, professor Adil Bakhshaliyev, featured speakers such as Academician Yagub Mahmudov, Doctor of sciences in history and member of the Milli Majlis Musa Gasimli, and doctor of Political Sciences and Member of the Milli Majlis Elman Nasirov. They emphasized that both the first and second phases of the "Contract of the Century" were shaped by the oil strategy initiated by national leader Heydar Aliyev. The speakers highlighted that the agreement holds a vital role in determining the future of the Azerbaijani people, and described its signing as a rare example of successful international diplomacy.
