On May 27, an event was held at Sumgait State University on the theme "Modern Azerbaijan Republic is the heir of the People"s Republic". Associate professor Elmar Khalilov, vice-rector on Social affairs and public relations of the university, opened the event with his speech, greeted the participants and congratulated our people on May 28 - Independence Day. He gave information about the history of the establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the work done in the army building and democratic values during the 23-month period of its activity. He said that the establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the first parliamentary republic in the Muslim East, on May 28, 1918, made our people"s dreams of independence come true. The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, which aims to build an independent, free, democratic republic, has carried out large-scale democratic reforms in this short period of time in terms of statehood, and adopted numerous laws covering various fields. Pointing out that the modern independent state of Azerbaijan is the successor of the People"s Republic, the vice-rector also said that today"s independent Azerbaijan is loyal to all its democratic traditions and keeps these traditions alive. National leader Heydar Aliyev provided  exceptional turns for the preservation of the heritage of the People"s Republic. Thus, with the initiative and leadership of the great leader Heydar Aliyev, on November 17, 1990, at the session of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Republic of Azerbaijan, the tricolor flag of the People"s Republic was raised and formalized as the state flag of the Nakhchivan Republic, this flag was presented to the Supreme Soviet of the Azerbaijan SSR as the official state flag of Azerbaijan. The petition for recognition as a symbol is the first clear example of this. This political tradition is successfully continued by President Mr. Ilham Aliyev, who is a worthy follower of the Great Leader. The decrees signed by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan "On the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijan People"s Republic", the Decrees on the declaration of 2018 as the "Year of the Azerbaijan People"s Republic" in our country. In addition, today we are proud that we are celebrating May 28 - Independence Day for the fourth year in the conditions of restoration of our territorial integrity. As a relic of the Azerbaijan People"s Republic, the flag of Azerbaijan flies in our native Karabakh, in our lands freed from occupation. Leyla Aliyeva, senior lecturer of the department of History and its teaching methodology, gave a report on "Organization and activity of the Azerbaijan People"s Republic". Around the report the following speakers made a speech: Farida Jabrayilova, senior lecturer of the department of Philosophy, sociology and political science, "The struggle of the Azerbaijan People"s Republic against Armenian nationalism", Aytekin Mammadova, head of the department of Pedagogy and psychology, "Measures in the field of education and culture of the Azerbaijan People"s Republic", Elmin Novruzlu, the chairman of STUC of SSU, "Youth policy of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic". They said that Azerbaijan, which regained its freedom at the end of the 20th century, managed to preserve its independence as a result of the decisive measures taken by the great leader Heydar Aliyev for the protection of statehood.
