Science and education have a great role in the annual growth of the prestige of the independent Azerbaijani state among the countries of the world, in its recognition in all spheres as a powerful and tolerant republic. That is why the state care for education, which is a priority area, has always been in the center of attention.

As a result of this attention and care, development and difference are evident in SSU today. Reconstruction and landscaping work has completely changed the appearance of the university. Major repairs were carried out in all educational buildings of the university, laboratories, classrooms were equipped with new devices and equipment. The educational and research laboratories created, the structural changes carried out, the expansion of international relations from year to year and so on reflect the rich reputation of the university, which is full of innovations.

It is no coincidence that President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Sumgayit, noting that "Sumgayit State University is already one of the most prestigious universities in the country."

SSU conducts training at all levels of education, including the doctoral program. It should be noted that according to the decision of the Presidium of the Supreme Attestation Commission under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, 3 Dissertation Councils were established at Sumgayit State University to defend dissertations in 6 specialties for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

Expanding its international relations year by year, the university has become a member of the Caspian State Universities and the Azerbaijan-Russia Association of Higher Education Institutions, playing an important role in the country"s integration into the world. SSU cooperates with higher education institutions of Turkey, Iran, USA, Russia, England, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Lithuania, Hungary, Spain, Poland, Ukraine, Israel, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and others within the framework of bilateral and multilateral agreements and international projects.

A number of successful projects are being implemented at SSU in order to integrate science into education, European values, and to improve the teaching process using best practices. With its achievements, the university has been recognized by scientific and educational centers operating in the CIS, Turkey and a number of European countries, and is famous not only for its material and technical base, but also for its highly qualified specialists. Sumgayit State University successfully continues its work as a partner in several international projects. As a result of these successes, a cooperation agreement was signed between SSU and USOTU in 2015. In accordance with the cooperation agreement, the staff and students of SSU have repeatedly visited the Ufa State Oil Technical University, participated in scientific conferences, forums of the Association of Azerbaijani-Russian Universities, student forums. At the same time, employees of USOTU regularly participated in scientific conferences organized at SSU, the results of research work were published in the scientific journals of both universities. Sumgayit State University, with the support of the Ministry of Education, organized by the Association of Azerbaijani-Russian Universities, hosted a high-level summer school "Journey to the Land of Fire Azerbaijan" on July 14-21, 2019.

On December 18, 2020, a teleconference between Sumgayit State University and Ufa State Oil Technical University dedicated to the 5th anniversary of the Association of Azerbaijani-Russian Universities was held. By the decision of the Scientific Council of Ufa State Oil Technical University, it was announced that the rector of Sumgayit State University, Professor Elkhan Huseynov, was named Honorary Professor of USOTU.

On 11.02.2021, the rector of Sumgayit State University, Professor Elkhan Huseynov, was awarded the diploma and mantle of Honorary Professor of Ufa State Oil Technical University.
