The department of finance and accounting was established in 2002 on the basis of the department of General economy. Since its establishment, the department has been training personnel for the bachelor"s degree in Accounting and Auditing, and since 2003, for the master"s level. Currently, the department is conducting personnel training at the bachelor"s degree in the specializations "Accounting" and "Finance", and at the master"s degree in the specialization "Accounting and Audit in the production sphere" and "Banking".

Department of Finance and Accounting with the Training Center of the State Tax Service under the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Financial Science-Education Center under the Ministry of Finance, the Departments of Accounting and Analysis of the Saint Petersburg State University of Economics, the Departments of Accounting of the Atyrau State University named after Khalel Dosmukhamedov on the improvement of personnel training of the Department of Finance and Accounting cooperate. At the same time, the department cooperates with financial and accounting organizations, the Association of Professional Financial Managers of Azerbaijan, the Baku Reporting Center, the Center for Economic Studies and Research, the Association of Accountants and Risk Professionals of Azerbaijan, and the Association of Young Accountants of Azerbaijan. Employees of the department regularly participate in international trainings on the Erasmus and Enactus project, and at the same time in financial and accounting trainings based on professional experience. The organization of industrial experiences for students" specialties is carried out in financial, tax, banking, insurance institutions, financial and accounting departments of enterprises.

In 2002-2008, cand.on econ.scien., assoc.prof. K.Kh.Abdullayev, in 2009-2010 cand.on econ.scienc. Sh.M.Ibrahimov and A.Y.Yahyayeva were in charge in 2011-2015. Currently, the department is headed by associate professor Logman Abdullayev.

The department has been named Finance and accounting since April 2017 by the decision of the Scientific Council of Sumgait State University.

More than 350 articles of the department, including 30 articles, were published abroad. 35 subject programs, 4 methodical materials have been approved and published, and 5 teaching materials have been published.

Employees of the department cooperate with the Institute of Economics of ANAS, including other higher schools of our republic: ASU, BSU, ADNA, NSU, St. Petersburg State University of Economics of the Russian Federation, Izmir Technical University of the Republic of Turkey, and jointly participate in national and international events.
