Institute of Petrochemical Processes named after Academician Y.H. Mammadaliyev of the Ministry of Science and Education

After the nationalization of the oil industry in 1920, the Central Chemical Laboratory (CCL) was established in Azerbaijan as part of Azerneft. In 1929, the Azerbaijan Oil Research Institute (AzORI) named after V.V. Kuybyshov was established on the basis of this laboratory, and that date is considered the date of establishment of the current IPP.
In 1946, Azerbaijan Oil Refining Scientific Research Institute (AzORSRI) and Azerbaijan Oil Extraction Scientific Research Institute (AzOESRI) were established on the basis of AzORI.
On the initiative of Academician Yusif Mammadaliyev, the Institute of Petrochemical Processes was established in the Academy of Sciences in 1959 based on a number of laboratories of AzORI, Azerbaijan Oil Refining Scientific Research Institute (AzORSRI) and the Institute of Chemistry of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences. The institute has been operating under the Ministry of Science and Education since 2022.
The institute was headed by M.F. Naghiyev in 1959-1962, V.S. Aliyev in 1962-1987, academician M.I. Rustamov in 1987-2011, and Vagif Abbasov since 2011.
In 1962, NKPI was named after Academician Y.H. Mammadaliyev, and in 1967, the Institute was awarded the ‘Red Labor Flag’ order.
In 1965-1969, based on the scientific potential of the Institute of Petrochemical Processes, the Institute of Additive Chemistry named after academician A.M. Guliyev, Theoretical Problems of Chemical Technologies named after academician M.F. Naghiyev (now the Institute of Catalysis and Inorganic Chemistry), Azerbaijan branch of the WTO Gas Processing Institute , the Sumgait branch of IPP (now Institute of Polymer Materials), Radiation Research Sector (now Institute of Radiation Problems) was established.
The Institute has a Scientific Council, scientific research laboratories, Department of Monomers, Oligomers and Catalysis, Department of Information and Telecommunications, Department of Physical and Physico-Chemical Research, Department of Oil and Gas Chemistry and Technology, Department of Petrochemical Synthesis, Department of Chemistry and Technology of Multifunctional Reagents, Petrochemical synthesis department, etc. operates.

As a continuation to Ministry of Science and Education (MoSE) initiative of integrating science with higher education, with the official consent of MoSE, Sumgait State University (SSU) has signed Memorandums of Understanding with the Institute of Petrochemical Processes (IPP) on November 22, 2023. Agreement was signed for the affiliation of institute for the joint implementation of personnel training and scientific research. Under the signed memorandum, it was agreed to officially consider the research output of SSU and its newly affiliated institution (IPP), including their publications and citations, as produced under the affiliation of SSU in Scopus and other international databases.
Academician Vagif Abbasov, director of the Institute of Petrochemical Processes, rector of SSU Rufat Azizov and representatives of both institutions took part in the meeting. Rector of SSU Rufat Azizov greeted the guests and said that he was happy to see them in this center of science that he leads. He emphasized the importance of signing the memorandum of understanding within the "Year of Heydar Aliyev" and noted that it will make a valuable contribution to strengthening the competitive human capital and the potential of highly qualified personnel in our country. He said that the globalized world requires new approaches regarding the application of innovations in the higher education system. For this reason, Sumgayit State University is expanding its relations.
The rector gave detailed information about the activities of the higher school, international programs and projects implemented. He noted that the decrees signed by the head of the country Ilham Aliyev in the field of education and science, the state programs adopted by him set the main task of modernizing the scientific and technical infrastructure, ensuring the integration of science, education and production, including the expansion of technological parks and centers.
In the end, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Sumgayit State University and the Institute of Petrochemical Processes. The memorandum was signed by SSU rector Rufat Azizov and director of the Institute of Petrochemical processes, academician Vagif Abbasov.
The cooperation memorandum envisages development of research and innovation activity, student-teacher exchange, preparation and implementation of joint research projects, exchange of scientific information, academic exchange, skill classes, organization of joint conferences, seminars and other international events, publication of scientific articles
Finally, the details of the memorandum and future plans were exchanged.
