Dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Great Leader Heydar Aliyev, the competitions of 3 types of sports (checkers, chess and backgammon) collegues of Sumgait State Technical College under Sumgait State University and SSU have been started. On February 28, the awarding ceremony of the winners of the spartakiade was held in the small assembly hall of the university.

Rector of the university professor Elkhan Huseynov opened the awarding ceremony and stated that such events are great importance in terms of ensuring and promoting the mass of sports among employees. He noted that on the eve of the Great Leader's birthday, a series of sports competitions are held between employees and students at Sumgayit State University every year. The main purpose of holding these competitions is to remember the dear memory of the Great Leader, as well as to support the popularity of sports and promoting a healthy lifestyle among young people.

The rector also drew attention to the fact that the foundation of Azerbaijan's great achievements in the sports fields of the world was laid by Heydar Aliyev. The great personality Heydar Aliyev has always focused on the high level development of sports in our country. As a result of this, our athletes gained high achievements in competitions and waved our flag. Today, as a logical result of the development strategy successfully pursued by President Ilham Aliyev, our country has become the leading state of the region in many fields. The year-by-year increase in the economic power of our country has had a positive effect on the progress of sports. Currently, not only in our capital, but also in the regions, many Olympic complexes, modern sports facilities have been put into use, the material and technical base has been strengthened. All these , of course, played an important role in the success of our athletes in local and international competitions.

Vice –rector of SSU for Social affairs and public relations associate professor Elmar Khalilov talked about the sports competitions, the level of development of sports and physical education in our country is increasing day by day, there is no doubt that special attention is paid to this field in higher education institutions. Sumgayit State University, like other higher educational institutions of our republic, also contributes to the development of this field.

Later, the winners of the chess, checkers and backgammon competitions were presented with certificates of honor and gifts.

We should say that in the chess competitions, the faculty of Engineering -first place, the faculty of Philology - the second place, and the faculty of Mathematics took the third place; winners in checkers: 1st place faculty of Engineering, 2nd place-faculty of Philology, 3rd place - faculty of Economics and management; In backgammon, the Sumgayit State Technical College under SSU - the first place, the faculty of Physics and electroenergetics the second place and the faculty of Economics and management won the third place.
