Every year, December 1 is celebrated as World AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) Day. The rapid growth of the HIV virus has caused an international day to be dedicated to it in the calendar. Today, all over the world, people"s attention is focused on this problem. For this purpose, Sumgayit State University organizes various events every year and educates students.

On December 1, an educational event was held at Sumgayit State University in cooperation with the Sumgayit city branch of the Red Crescent Society under the motto "Participate and find out your HIV status" on "World AIDS Day".

Associate professor Elmar Khalilov vice-rector for Social affairs and public relations of the university opened the event and greeted the participants, noting that the AIDS pandemic is one of the most serious problems in the field of infectious diseases in the world health care. Emphasizing the importance of holding the event, associate professor Elmar Khalilov pointed out that the main goal of organizing such events is to inform young people about AIDS, as well as the consequences of drug addiction and other harmful habits, and to increase their interest in education, science, and sports.He noted that our university has a program for it and  events are the result of the attention and care given to the health of young people.

The  vice-rector spoke about the state policy implemented  under the leadership of President Mr. Ilham Aliyev for the health of younger generation. In order to achieve more effective results in the fight against bad habits, to protect young people from these evils, to form a healthy lifestyle in them, everyone should fight together, educational work among teenagers and young people should always be in the center of attention, special attention should be paid to the promotion of national moral values in this area.

Matanat Maharramova- the chair of the Sumgayit city branch of the RCC spoke  that the fight against AIDS is one of the actual issues. She said that the main goal of celebrating AIDS Day is to bring the countries of the world together in the fight against the problem. She talked about the wide promotion of a healthy lifestyle in our country, the protection and rehabilitation of the rights of people addicted to drugs and alcohol, people infected with AIDS, and the laws and programs adopted to fight against AIDS. She said that the celebration of that day at the international level serves to unite efforts in the fight against the HIV infection and AIDS  which is spreading in all regions of the world.

At the event, videos were also shown about the serious consequences of AIDS.
