On October 18, a scientific and practical conference "The role of Baku State University in the development of science and education in Azerbaijan", dedicated to the 100th anniversary of BSU, began its work at Sumgayit State University.

The conference was attended by the academic and student staff of SSU and representatives of BSU under the leadership of the rector Elchin Babayev.

First, the guests visited the Heydar Aliyev Center and got acquainted with photographs reflecting the life and work of the national leader, his trip abroad, meetings with the leaders of leading countries of the world, examined books dedicated to the great politician.

Rector of SSU Professor Elkhan Huseynov welcomed the guests and participants of the conference and congratulated on the 100th anniversary of BSU. He said that the university was established by the parliament of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic on September 1, 1919. National leader Heydar Aliyev praised this event and noted that from the beginning of the century to the present, BSU has been the center of science of Azerbaijan and its institution is one of the most significant events in the history of the country. The onset of a new stage in the development of science and education at BSU is connected with the name of the national leader Heydar Aliyev. Being a graduate of this university, he paid him special attention and care. He expressed his love and respect for BSU as follows: "I am proud that I am a graduate of Baku State University."

Today, the BSU anniversary is assessed as a significant event in the socio-political life of the republic and is celebrated at various levels. For the first time in the history of Azerbaijan, the anniversary of BSU was celebrated at UNESCO. This causes a sense of pride in every Azerbaijani, especially among educational staff.

The rector also noted that BSU is also native to him, as he played a big role in the development of his career. He is a graduate of this oldest university in the republic, until 1995 he worked here as a teacher, senior teacher, associate professor, secretary of the party committee. In 1995-1999s, he was vice-rector for International Relations, 1999-2002 vice-rector for academic affairs.

The rector emphasized that BSU made a huge contribution to the protection and development of the country"s statehood, to the development of scientific progress, educational work, science, and the formation of a national ideology.

Then, the rector of SSU, Professor Elkhan Huseynov presented the rector of the BSU Elchin Babayev a carpet with a picture of the first university building and a congratulatory letter, once again congratulating the BSU staff on the anniversary.

BSU Rector Elchin Babayev greeted the SSU academic and student staff and thanked the Rector Elkhan Huseynov for organizing and holding the conference. He noted that since the creation of BSU, as the first university of a new type in the Muslim East, the university has come a long and glorious path. President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree “On the 100th anniversary of Baku State University,” according to which the anniversary of the university will be celebrated both in Azerbaijan and beyond. A large anniversary event will be held in November.

Rector Elchin Babayev also emphasized that SSU makes a worthy contribution to the development of science and education in the republic, the training of qualified personnel for the country and wished success to its team.

The following people delivered report in the event: head of the Department of Azerbaijani and foreign countries’ literature Avtandil Mammadov - “The Role of Baku State University in the development of science and education in Azerbaijan” and Dean of the Faculty of Journalism of BSU Vugar Aliyev -“The role of Baku State University in the socio-political and cultural life of Azerbaijan”. Around these reports, discussions were held by scientists from BSU and SSU. They talked about their achievements and shared their impressions of the BSU, of which they are graduates.

Graduates of the BSU: dean of the Faculty of Mathematics of SSU, Honored Teacher Zafar Huseynov, Professor of the Department of Solid State and Semiconductor Physics Professor Mammadali Zarbaliyev, associate professor of the Department of Differential Equations and Optimization, Honored Teacher Akper Mammadov, Professor of the Department of Petrochemistry and Chemical Engineering, Honored Teacher Gafar Ramazanov and other speakers spoke in the event. Speakers noted that BSU graduates play a huge role in the study of the ancient history and culture of the people, the protection and development of their native language, the propaganda of patriotism and ideology of Azerbaijanism.

At the end of the conference, BSU rector Elchin Babayev and other guests got acquainted with the II academic building of SSU, the educational museum in the open air on electric power and a training ground with a high-voltage substation.
